Spotlight: Week of Street Fighter II!
Day 2: Here comes a new challenger!
It was the summer 1991 when I was first introduced to Street fighter II: The World Warrior (Capcom).
My older brother and I were spending a few days in North London visiting family and a fair had come to town. I had never been to a fair before and didn’t really know what to expect in terms of entertainment, but as soon as I saw the arcades, my eyes lit up. Bearing in mind we only had a C64 at home, watching Blanka’s idle animation for the first time was a sight to behold. The detail, colours and sound were so far beyond anything we had witnessed at the time. Before pulling off combo or even knowing what a forward, down, down-forward was, it was the games CPS2 powered graphics that blew our minds. What we were witnessing was the apex of visual quality for the time. My brother and I would continue to watch the attract screen with an eargerness to see who or what (remember, we had just seen a green skinned, flame coloured hair Brazilian who can generate electricity) was next, what other characters would reveal themselves?
We didn’t have any money at the time, so we didn’t get to play, but left the fair in deep conversation over what we had just seen. Where and when would we be able to play it again, if ever?
