A new year is upon us and with it comes the anticipation for a new cycle of releases. This week, I will preview some of the titles I’m looking forward to playing or hearing more about in 2018, beginning with Part 1.
Guacamelee 2 (Drinkbox Studios)
The original Guacamelee, was a combination of tight brawling, semi-deep exploration and fiendish platforming which resulted in one of my favourite independent releases in recent years. From the looks of things, the sequel will offer more of the same with improved upgrades a new antagonist and an enhanced “Pollo Power” mechanic.
Huntdown (Easy Trigger Games)
Huntdown has an aesthetic that harks back to the Amiga action platfomers of the early 90s, such as Turrican, Ocean’s RoboCop port and Switchblade 2. With local cooperative play, gameplay wise, Huntdown resembles Contra in parts, however, it’s gritty, cyberpunk influenced environments and distinctive enemies help to give it it’s own identity. Huntdown releases on PC and consoles in the New Year.
Devil May Cry 5 (Capcom)
There has been enough speculation, supposed leaked details and cryptic tweets from Devil May Cry 4’s director Hideaki Itsuno, to suggest that Devil May Cry 5 is currently in development. Despite the combat in ‘4’ reaching a series, possibly genre, high, I do hope that in ‘5’ enough focus is placed on level design and pacing – these were two areas where ‘4’ dropped the ball in a big way. I’m expecting a reveal or announcement at E3.
